I read somewhere that eCos is API compatible with Linux so most Linux software can be compiled and run on eCos. To what extent is this valid? Thanks in advance.

How much Linux software runs on eCos?

There are API similarities, but the OSes are very different, and the target market is very different too. Some Linux software may compile and link against the eCos library without source patching - not terribly much of it, I think - but this is only part of the job of porting.
