In the IAR project options do you have the correct device selected. You
must select the XMS430F5438 and not the MSP430F5438.

I have been using the spy-bi-wire interface without any problems but have
not tried the full JTAG.

Hello!

I think it has nothing to do with choosing MSP instead of XMS. I have never=
tried,
but I heard recently at TI advanced conference that the parallel port emula=
tion
tool cannot be used with this device. I am afraid you will have to buy a US=
B
emulation tool...

Hi,

According to my knowledge both MSP-FET430UIF, MSP-FET430PIF can be used as =
an interface.
But I haven't tried.

Did you go through 5xx documents.
The below document mentions that the JTAG pins are shared with general-purp=
ose I/O, which differs in most MSP430x2xx and MSP430x4xx.
page 4 in http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slaa396/slaa396.pdf.

I don't know how much this could help you.

Re: msp430f5438 - dietert1 - Sep 19 5:10:16 2008

Hello,

yesterday i unpacked a F5438 USB FET that i arrived some days ago from
digikey. There was a sheet of paper telling me the kit should include
a CDRom and two MSP430F5438 parts. None of those, instead one piece
labeled XM430F5438, which may be an engineering sample or so. The part
fits into the TQ100 socket of the FET.
Then i downloaded the current KickStart, about 50 MBytes. There was
some problem with the myTI login. I had to try on several computers
and browsers until the download finally started. After connecting and
installing everything on a XP machine (USB drivers from IAR
subdirectory), i started the IDE, opened the "FLashing the LED"
workspace and activated the "MSP430x5xx (C) - Debug" project. In the
project options i had to change the processor from F5419 to
XMS430F5438. Then it started debugging and blinking the LED without
any messages or problems. The FET jumpers were default and set for the
classic JTAG like you are trying to use.
Right now i connected everything again using one of the old Olimex LPT
JTAGs we have, and after selecting the parallel port in the project
options it worked immediately and blinked the LED.

Regards,

Re: Re: msp430f5438 - Ian Okey - Sep 19 5:24:07 2008

The XM part is the prototype silicon part. This has a number of published
errata and a couple of things that are missing, most notably from my point
of view there is no calibration data in the on chip flash. The transfer
function of the on chip temperature sensor has not been published so when I
use my F149 code I get a temperature of 9 deg C in the office.

That's amazing, an air conditioner, implemented in software, on a chip=20
that draws just a few micro-amps. We can all relax, the environment is=20
saved!! yeah, Go Ti :@}

Re: Re: msp430f5438 - Ian Okey - Sep 19 9:50:17 2008

In the last hour or so TI have published an updated datasheet for the 5438
chip. This includes the temperature sensor characteristic. A little
bedtime reading now being printed.
