Be aware that there are lots of potential problems.
The Programming Tool may have firmware that needs to be updated.
The PC device driver for the Programming Tool also needs to be updated.
TI/IAR, Olimex, Crossworks, and others are not synchronized in updates
and kill each other (unintentionally).
If you intend to use MSP430F1xx or other older chips, you are probably
okay. If you intend to use newer chip, ask about the support for that
chip before you buy the software/hardware. The updates can lag 6
months behind.
I do not have any recommendation as I use assembler only. (TI
MSP-FET430UIF and IAR-KickStart are updated in sync with new MSP430
chips.)
