Capacitors on ATN pin? - Chris - Nov 28 19:56:05 2007
I'm installing a connector on a project so I don't have to keep
removing the BX-24 all the time. I'm double-checking the connections
on my BOE, and there appear to be 2 capacitors on the ATN connection.
These are not shown on the website's picture of the connections. Are
these necessary, or just to try to filter out noise?

An AC-coupled voltage divider, I think, for 12v RS232 levels.
BS2 module ATN (pin 3) is DC-coupled and inverted to /Reset.
BX-24 module ATN is DC-coupled but not inverted and not to /Reset.
BX-24p module ATN is AC-coupled and inverted to /Reset.

Well, I've got another project with a BS2 in it, without the
capacitors. Aren't the BS2 & BX24 compatible? If I use the project
I've got now with my BX-24, or build my new one without the caps, will
I have any problems? I don't want to blow a $45 chip...
I believe I have the BX24p...

They are pin-compatible, yes. They differ in how they use ATN
signaling, but that boils down to respectively similar functions, to
control the module by the IDE.
FWIW, I have a Basic Stamp Super Carrier that's seven years old now, I
guess, an apparent similar predecessor to the BOE. Frankly, I have
never paid any attention to that capacitive ATN divider until now; I've
used the board for many short experiments with many BX-24s and ZX-24s
with no harm - or unexpected behavior.
I expect you'll be fine with it.

BOE is a Parallax product, isn't it?
