Unable to download a new program. - =?iso-8859-1?q?Reynaldo_D=EDaz?= - May 5 11:54:35 2007
My bx24-p worked well the first time I used it. I downloaded the "Hello
World" program. Now I can't download a new program anymore, all I got
is: "Unable to halt BasicX", an errors 198 to 212.
One thing strange is when I use a 9v or 12v adapter, it runs the "hello
world" program fine, but when I use a 7v adapter, it displays the
message faster and truncated on de same text line.
I have tried the convencionals methodes to halt it, and inclusive I
have begun to download the new program and then power on the chip, and
nothing happens.
Can someone help me?

That certainly suggests a power problem.
One thing to determine is that the seven-volt adapter delivers seven
volts; less than seven volts might be insufficient. Look at your BX-24p
to determine which regulator you have, a three-leg 78L05 or an 8-pin
2951; each is located in the upper-right corner of the module.
I believe the early BX-24p uses a 78L05 regulator which needs seven
volts. The current BX-25p-u uses a 2951 - as does the original BX-24 -
which needs only 5.5v.
If you have a 78L05, your seven-volt supply might be marginal.

I have an 8-pin regulator with reads "51A PEIA"
But even with the 9V or 12V regulator I can't download a new program. That's the main
problem.
Can you suggest me something to fix this problem?
Thanks in advanced
Reynaldo.

Did you do the ATN diagnostic in the IDE?

RE: Unable to download a new program. - Reynaldo Diaz - May 5 16:04:04 2007
I did and it was ok, at High it was 7V (ok is 3 to 15V) and at Low it was -7 (ok is 0 to
-15V), so it is Ok. Anyway the manual does not say what to do if this test fail.

Hi,
You did not mention why you want to use the 7 volt adapter if it's running OKAY with the
9V or the 12 V adapter.
Here are some checks that you can use to troubleshoot your problem with the 7 volt
adapter.
1- Check the adapter to make sure is a 7 volt DC. Some adapters provide only pulsating
DC voltage. Use a voltmeter in the AC mode and if the reading is higher than few
millivolts then the adapter is not good. You need to adds some capacitors.
Some adapter use only a diode to filter the AC to DC.
2- Check the voltage after you plugged the adapter to make sure is higher than 5 volt.
This is to make sure that the adapter can supply the load. Second ,check the voltage at
pin 21, should be higher than 4.8 volt. if not you can not use the 7 volt adapter.

Yes I did. I have to mention that I tell you about the 7V adapter problem just because,
maybe, the download problem is related to it. but I have an 9V adpater. I mean, I don't
want to solve the 7V problem, only I want to solve the "Unable to halt" problem, so I can
download programs to my bx24.
Any help is welcome.

Hi,
Double check the cable but this time check the cable resistance directly from the
processor pin 1,2,3 and 4 to the computer cable connector. This will verify that you have
a good cable connection.
Check the micro chip voltage at the pin. They should read as follow:
pin 1 - .1 volt
pin 2 - -10 volt
pin 3 - -10 volt
pin 4 - ground

Problem solved!
As I said, the problem was related to the power supply. I used another
12V power adapter and now I can download any program seamless. But if I
use the first 12V adapter or the 9V or 7V adapters, I can't download
nothing.
What's the difference between the two 12V adapters, I don't know
I'll need a oscilloscope to realize it.

Hi,
You have to be careful because there are AC and DC adapters. Check the specification of
your adapters.

Are you using a mother board with a regulator on it or external regulator??
If so check your regulator model to see what the min. input voltage is.
Some of mine need to be greater then 2 volts above the VDD or regulated voltage
output.
so if your regulated 5 volts and puting in 7 volts your right around the min and will
not get out a good 5 v out of the regulator.
The faster text and text on the same line could be the basicx reseting itself from low
voltage.
Then starting back up.
Try puting a Digital volt meter on the regulated output and see if the voltage drops
below the 4.8 v. I think thats the min. for regulated input to the basicX.
Last, Always make sure + is going to +. Not all powersupply conectors pin out the
same.
Hope this helps and let me
