There's tons of data at the avrfreaks website and also from the Atmel
website. It's all free. You can download any spec sheet and lots of
application notes from Atmel's website.

I will assume this for a hobby and these finances will come from other
hobbies. If it is a commercial adventure you can justify spending more
money from the start.

Well, what is it you want from AVR microcontrollers, to program only
in assembly, only in C, only in Basic... So the answer is what is it
you want to do with your AVR?

A very good book on it is "Embedded C Programming and the Atmel AVR" from
https://www.priio.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=6&idproduct=83

Like Zack said, AVRFreaks
www.avrfreaks.net
is a great place to get info and to interact with others that have the
AVR habit. And it FREE!

The owner of Smiley's Micros is a knowledgeable guy, contributes to
AVRFreaks and has a business at
www.smileymicros.com

If you are into Basic on the AVR BASCOMAVR it probably the compiler
for you.

If you want to program in "C" I suggest CodeVisionAVR. The demo
version is just like the full blown version except the size of you
code is limited. It has a CodeWizard that is great for newbies and old
farts too.

Then there is AVRStudio4, the grandady of them all. Its a great way to
start out with the basic of how the AVR works even if you do plan on
going on to a high level language like C.

There, I more or less gave it to you in reverse order from where I
feel you should start...

First, get in touch with AVRFreaks, register, look around, download
stuff, ask questions.

Second, AVRStudio4 and assembly, atleast one or two programs, like
blink LEDs and read the state of input switches and output to LEDs

Third, depending if you are into Basic or C. If it is basic then its
BASCOMAVR. If it is "C" the CodeVisionAVR, cvAVR.

Forth, is "Embedded C Programming and the Atmel AVR". One of the
authors is a professor at Purdue University. It was written as a
college text book but it is also written so regular hobbiests will
fine it understandable.

There you have it, my opioion, others will probably disigree, good lick,
Mike Bronosky
